NLSO’s life does not stop at our regular rehearsals and concerts. We also like to…
… support young professional musicians
In March 2026 we organised our first ever conducting masterclass, allowing four young conductors to conduct a movement of a symphony each under the guidance of our Musical Director Robert Max. The event was entirely sponsored by NLSO and our members loved it. The next one should follow soon!

We are particularly proud and delighted to have commissioned a new piece of music from composer Lillie Harris for our 2026-27 season; a very special project for NLSO. The piece will be performed on 26 June 2027 in St James Muswell Hill and we’re very excited to discover it.
… encourage our members to play (even) more
Since 2023 we have been holding an informal chamber music concert each spring where our members can perform a piece of their choice together in a relaxed setting. This is always a lovely Saturday afternoon with beautiful playing, a very supportive audience, as well as tea and cake!

In September 2024 some of our members turned into soloists for our very first concerto evening, a fun event behind closed doors allowing them to play through a movement of their choice. It proved so successful and enjoyable for everyone that we will be holding another one in 2027.

… meet up and have fun!
We do like going to the pub, particularly to relax and debrief after our concerts.
Several times a year we attend concerts in London together, benefitting from group discounts on the ticket price. Whenever possible those concerts include pieces we will be playing in the near future or have played recently.
We get together each December for a wonderfully warm and festive Christmas meal in a local restaurant, for a combination of delicious food, great wine and great fun (see photo above). Some may say this is the best event in the NLSO season!
And we’re also runners! Our running club, which already has 15+ members, meets once a month for an easy-paced 5k and a coffee in north London.
